Exploring the Ultimate in Customized Gaming: MegaModz PS5 Controller Review

MegaModz creates custom controllers for Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo systems. I recently got a chance to review their custom PS5 controller and even designed one myself from scratch.

Overview
MegaModz takes a standard PS5 controller (or the DualSense Edge) and allows you to personalize its appearance and functionality. This customization goes beyond just looks; you can add various mods as well. The basic structure of the PS5 controller, including its size, weight, and dimensions, remains largely unchanged.

MegaModz Custom PS5 Controller Review
When you visit the MegaModz website, you’ll start with a basic PS5 controller. The site is designed to show any changes you make in real-time, whether you’re on a phone or desktop. For desktop users, the customization options appear on the right side.

The first step in the customization process involves physical modifications, particularly the back buttons, which significantly change how you control your games. From there, you can move on to altering the controller’s colors. There are numerous options available, making it one of the most customizable controllers out there. You can change the face buttons, triggers, front panels, and even opt for interchangeable thumb sticks in a variety of colors, including some exotic hydro-dipped options.

You can also adjust the back material of the controller. I chose a grippy texture for better control during intense gameplay, but standard and soft backs are also available.

Packaging
The MegaModz controller itself is a standard PS5 controller. I chose a red base, so mine came in a Cosmic Red package. It included a standard PlayStation controller booklet, the thumb grips I ordered, and a USB Type-C cable. However, my package was missing a controller guidebook, but the company is sending it to me.

Physical Mods
The primary reason for getting a custom controller is the physical mods that enhance your gaming experience. You don’t need to purchase all the mods; you can choose the ones you find most beneficial to save money.

Back Buttons
One standout feature is the back buttons. These premium additions allow you to map any button on the controller to the extra back buttons. The mapping process is quick and easy, letting you change back button functions even in the middle of matches. For example, I could reload, jump, crouch, and melee without lifting my thumbs off the sticks, giving me a constant aiming advantage in games like Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2. The back buttons also proved useful in other games; I mapped the NOS function to a back button in Need for Speed Unbound and assigned gears to them in Gran Turismo. The customization possibilities are endless.

Triggers
MegaModz offers mechanical shoulder buttons that provide “precise in-game control and feedback” and “faster input and response times.” Although my custom controller didn’t include these, they are said to be more responsive due to their shorter travel distance compared to standard triggers. While the stock R2 button travels 7 mm before being fully pressed, the custom trigger’s travel is just 1.6 mm.

Buttons
You can also opt for mechanical face buttons. While the standard buttons are already quite clicky, this mod makes them even more responsive.

Back Grip
I chose a rubberized back for my PS5 controller, which turned out to be a great decision. It’s well-made and comfortable to touch. I played Diablo IV for six hours straight with this controller, and the back grip remained comfortable throughout.
