Gaming on Android is super popular these days, and the Pimax Portal aims to make it even more enjoyable. Essentially, it’s an Android device robust enough to handle demanding games with ease, but it offers more than just gaming.
The Pimax Portal takes a cue from the Nintendo Switch with its design, featuring magnetically detachable controllers that expand its functionality. This feature is a standout, giving gamers the flexibility to play however they prefer. Plus, its powerful internals make it an excellent device for game emulation, adding even more options for gamers.
We didn’t get the VR accessories with our review unit, so we couldn’t test its VR features. This review focuses on what the handheld device does well and what could be improved.
Unboxing the Pimax Portal
The Pimax Portal arrives in a tidy white box that keeps the console secure and safe. The packaging feels premium, matching the high-end price of the handheld. Inside the box, you’ll find the Portal, a USB Type-C cable, some paperwork, and a microfiber cleaning cloth.
My unit had a bit of adhesive on the screen, but thankfully, a pre-installed screen protector meant there was no actual damage. The included microfiber cloth was handy for cleaning it up. Overall, the packaging is solid and protective, though it doesn’t come with many extras.

Design Highlights
The design of the Pimax Portal is its best feature. Inspired by the Nintendo Switch, it’s slim, small, and lightweight. Pimax did a great job enhancing the Switch’s design rather than reinventing the wheel. The device’s sleek black design is visually appealing and adds to the overall gaming experience. It’s also comfortable to hold for extended periods, reducing wrist strain during long gaming sessions.
The controllers match the black aesthetic and have a matte finish that resists fingerprints and provides extra grip. There’s also a large fan on the back to keep the device cool. Overall, the Pimax Portal is a pleasure to use and, while not exactly pocket-sized, is still quite portable.
It also comes with five cameras on the back for use in VR mode. However, since the VR holder, controller sleeves, and compatible software weren’t ready at the time of the review, we couldn’t test these features.
Build Quality
The Pimax Portal is primarily made of high-quality plastic, which feels comfortable to hold without any sharp edges. The build quality is excellent throughout, giving the device a sturdy feel. The magnetic controllers are well-constructed, fitting perfectly without any loose screws or gaps.
Controller Features
The Portal’s detachable controllers really set it apart. The magnetic controllers can be easily detached, allowing for different play styles. You can dock the console and even set it up to let another player join in with minimal fuss. The controllers are small but well designed, with good button placement and responsive analog sticks.
In summary, the Pimax Portal is an exciting device for Android gaming. It offers robust performance, versatile controls, and a sleek design, though some features, like VR, are still to be tested.
